A couple of nights ago, we had one of those little power hiccups. The power went off for a second ... just long enough to require all the clocks to be reset. We didn't think too much about it, it's a pretty common occurrence here in Florida.
Later that evening my son went to play his Nintendo Wii and discovered that he couldn't power it on. That's when we remembered the boys had been playing their Nintendo video games shortly before the power surge, now the wii wouldn't power on! There were no power lights, no standby light, nothing. We checked the surge protector that the Wii was plugged into, we reset it and tried again. Nothing. We unplugged the console and tried plugging it into a different power outlet; it still didn't work. The situation didn't look good. I was beginning to think we'd be buying a new Wii console very soon and it was certainly not in the budget.

I decided to do a search online to see if I could find any ideas on how we might fix this problem. I found many posts from users with the exact same problem, but the solutions were bleak. Everything from taking the Wii apart, to sending it in to have it serviced. But, what it came down to was the console was fried and there wasn't much we could do about it. That was about what I had expected. So, we did a search on Amazon to see what a new Nintendo game consoles would cost and it was about what we expected, more than we could spend at the time. Well, I wasn't going to purchase anything at the moment, so I did some more searching ... and lo and behold, I came across a very simple fix!

Reset the AC Adapter for your Nintendo Wii
Here's how we solved our problem and I hope it might help someone else who is experiencing the same issue.
- Unplug the Wii AC adapter at both ends (from the back of the Wii system and from the wall outlet or power strip).
- The AC adapter must remain unplugged at both ends for a full 2 minutes. We had unplugged the Wii several times, but the trick was leaving it unplugged for the entire 2 minutes!
- Unplug anything connected to the USB ports and the Nintendo GameCube Controller ports (such as LAN Adapters, keyboards, Nintendo GameCube controllers, etc.).
- After you've waited 2 minutes, plug the AC adapter into the Wii system and directly into a wall outlet, not a surge protector or power strip. If the power light comes on and stays on, then it appears resetting the AC Adapter worked.
If this did not fix your problem, here are some other things you might want to check:
- Make sure that the word "Wii" and the model number "RVL-002 (USA)" are molded into the AC adapter. Unlicensed products are not fully compatible and may not work correctly.
- Check the AC Adapter for physical damage. Physical damage, such as frayed wiring or a cracked housing can cause the system to shut down. If your AC Adapter shows signs of physical damage and needs to be replaced, you can purchase one from Nintendo's online store.
If resetting the AC Adapter did not fix your power issues, you might find a fix at Nintendo's Support site.

Thank you so much for putting this information online. My Wii was "stuck" and wouldn't load a Nexflix movie. I unplugged it to try and restart it and it wouldn't power on after I did this (Ooopps! I found out I'm not supposed to do this!) I thought we were going to have to go without our Wii for a while until we could buy a new one, but I googled our problem and your site came up. We unplugged the AC adaptor for over two minutes and then plugged back in to the wall outlet and it started back up. Thank you for taking the time to share this!

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you very much for the tip. I normally am pretty good at finding the solution for an electrical problem but I couldn't figure this one out. I had it close though. Before I got online to look this issue up, I just unplugged the power cable from the back of the Wii but left it plugged in at the other end. I had no idea that box in the middle had some kind of "brain" and all you had to do is unplug both end and wait a couple of minutes. No doubt you always learn something new everyday. And the best part is I didn't have to invest money on a new Wii console !! Once again thank you very much !!

thanks so much for the help! we started out our day with no water to our house, the city shut it off so.. no showers for anyone this morning after being in a hot car for 6 hours yesterday.. it was no rose garden in here. then about noon, it starts back up and alas, our washer doesnt work to get into some clean clothes and to wash everything from our suitcases. so we work on the washer, turn the water off to it, bang on the pipes, sware at it, and nothin works so we flip all the breakers to see if that would help. and whether or not it did, we eventually got it fixed by detaching the hot and cold hoses and blowing on them hahahahaha. BUT by filpping the breakers we surged our wii, and thought our day couldn't get any more filled with problems. yet with my lightning fast reflexes i dashed to my laptop to search for an answer, YOUR answer!!!! and it was amazing that it actually worked!! i thought we'd have to get a new wii!! Thank you so much for the advice!

It worked! Thanks for the recommendation. I unplugged the power supply and let it rest for 5 minutes, just to be on the safe side. Plugged into a wall outlet. Bingo. Switched to the power strip. Bingo. Lots of relief here, knowing the recent power surges did not fry the Wii.

Perfect solution, it worked! We had an electrician come over and fix some problem outlets (not where the Wii was) and he turned a few breaker switches on and off. We hadn't played the Wii since then, and the kids were bummed this morning to find it wouldn't work - tried other outlets, unplugging and replugging. Nothing. Followed your advice and we're immediately up and running after leaving the adapter unplugged for just over 2 minutes. Happy boys, happy dad! Thank you.

@ Bernard, did you unplug everything from the wii console? Make sure everything is disconnected and the cord is unplugged at both ends. Wait 2 minutes and try again. If that doesn't work, check the outlet or surge protector ... hopefully your wii hasn't been permanently damaged. I sure hope this works for you!

It worked! Also, I had it plugged into a power strip, and I noticed the plug it was plugged into still doesn't work, even though the other plugs on the power strip work. Playing it safe and getting rid of the power strip. Thanks!!!

Just what I was looking for. We had a power surge and I thought it may be ruined. Fix worked like a champ. I had tried unplugging all of the connections on the wii before finding your article but it didn't work. Unplugging from the wall was necessary too.

YAY!!! The trick is to unplug BOTH...wow, I never would have known. We were stupid and had our wii plugged directly into the wall when the power went out briefly, and then the wii wouldn't turn on at all. Unplugged it from the cord for a day, nothing. Found this information, unplugged the power cord from the wall as well as from the wii, and BINGO! The wii lives!! And now it's living connected to a surge protector, LOL.

Our Wii is plugged into a surge protector so when it wouldn't power back on, we thought it was fried (even though everything else worked). Yeah, I have a wireless keyboard sitting on my Wii (cause who wastes type typing one key at a time) and I bump it all the time so when my Wii was all "+_+ I am teh deadness" I thought I bumped it too hard or something.
I even shook it a little to see if anything rattled inside(after plugging it in to 3 diff wall outlets...*remembers to go plug phone back in*).
I was about to cry since I'd just fixed two computers, one of them twice, and had to take my own computer out for repairs and I was all, I -EXPLETIVES DELETED- bet my repair man can't fix a Wii,...to the internet!

I called Best buy first....they told me there was nothing they could do. That I would need to call Nintendo and Sony (both of our game consoles stopped working) We had tried unplugging, but we did not unplug the adapter from both ends. OH MY GOSH!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! My husband bought an aftermarket Wiimote charging station that plugged into our Wii via USB. All was fine for a few days, and then one day it just wouldn't work. I unplugged everything, probably not for 2 minutes, and still nothing. UH ~ we were devastated, no Wii, no Netflix...SAD kids :( (Unlike my pessimistic husband...LOL) I always think there is an easier way, especially when the alternative was spending more than I had to get another Wii. Lamme, we also had a power surge the other night and the WII wouldn't come back on. I unplugged it from the wall and tried other plugs around the house. Started to take it apart and thought that I would check the output voltage of the transformer first. 12VDC was coming out like a champ so I thought that we were screwed. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't expect this to work. I thought my Husband would be P.O.'d when he came home that we "somehow" broke the Wii. I unplugged it. this did NOT work for me, (pretty sure I'm a special case) but I did just replace the power cord and now it's fine. So if this doesn't work for you it might just be that you need a new power cord not a whole new Wii. Just a thought.

I can't believe this actually worked! I took out my ac voltage detector and diagnosed that power was actually going to the wii. I figured that our console had fried, until I read all of these posts. I tried it again-- this time, I unplugged the fan from the back, and then let it sit (probably for almost 10 minutes). I am not sure if the reason it wouldn't turn on was due to the power supply, or maybe there was some dust particals interfering with the connection to the back, but what ever it was, my Wii has turned on again.

I just came home, and my step dad asked me if I had done something to the Wii, cause it won't turn on. I tried your remedy, and it hasn't worked yet. I unplugged it again, and I am going to see if letting it sit for a little longer, will work. Stay tuned.

Great tip! Was in a serious game of Tiger Woods and had a power cough and game sytem turned off! Of course I was upset that I lost my great game but even more disarrayed that my Wii would not power up. Found your tip and low and behold there was power. But be sure you disconnect power cord from power source and from back of system. I had to do this twice because I didn't connect from source. Thanks again for your help!

OMG!THANK YOU! I read your story wondering if I wrote it myself. My husband told me that the Wii adapter has an auto-resetting breaker and that's what happened with the power surge. The breaker tripped and couldn't reset until removed from power long enough.

The surge protector was flipped off for a total of a bout 5 seconds, went to use the wii and nothing!! pretty sure my hubs was gonna fling it out the window, we were so annoyed. When I googled this problem ur resolution is the first thing that came up...THANK YOU!! We can now resume our Netflix movie night.

Thanks for your info, in our case it was a little weird, we didn't have a power surge, before the problem occurred the kids were playing Mario Kart with other players via the wireless internet connection. During play a message came on the screen indicating that the internet connection had been lost and some sort of error code was indicating. It further said to eject the disc, turn it off and back on. The disc could be ejected but the Wii console couldn't be turned off. It was then unplugged from the wall to power it down. Plugging it back in about 45 seconds later still couldn't turn it back on. I did a Google search and found this hub with the info you posted. We unplugged everything from the back of the Wii, unplugged the power cord from the wall and waited just under 3 minutes. We plugged everything back in and then the power cord back to the wall....
it powered back on and all is well again!! Thanks so much again for this great procedure!

well i was playing blackops on my wii when it suddenly froze and made a weired sound. so i unplugged it like usual and plugged it back in but this was my 3rd time doing it about but the red light or anything didnt come on!! i was scared!!!! i unplugged everything and didnt work i will wait the 2 minutes and post back to see if it worked.

It wasn't my tire blowing this morning, or my furnace, air cleaner and humidifier all going out at once. Or the fact that my children broke the leg off my kitchen table, ot that my boyfriend walked into my sliding door with a recycling bin and broke it. It wasn't even that my son tossed a ball at the ceiling and broke his light fixture. What threw me over the edge today and was the last straw was when the wii powered off and wouldn't go back on. It was the worst day ever for this already struggling mom of 5. Thank god I found this post first try before I threw the wii at the TV and offically left my family. Worked like a charm. First try. Well my wii stopped working and i noticed 1 clock was blinking...funny how nothing happened to the ps3 that was hooked into the same spot. I googled my wii wont come on and clicked this and I did the 2 min thing and....it worked :D Thank you soooo much for posting that. The kids just came to me, telling me that the Wii won't turn on. I went down, tried unplugging it, even tried unplugging both ends, but nothing. They were so worried, almost in tears. WOW!!!!! I cant believe this worked! I came home from work today and my Wii wouldn't power up and I was freakin out! lol....
Anyhoo, I hopped on the good ole internet to see if anyone else has had this problem and how much it was going to cost to fix it (or to see even if that was a possibility) and I came across this fix...... I unplugged it while I cooked dinner and plugged it back in and Voila..... IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too put in my search query to see if there was anything that I could do but just knowing that I would either have to find a "Wii Dr.", or buy a new one which wasnt in our budget! I found your post and it was exactly what happened - the lights flickered just enough to reset every clock in the house and was also about the time the Wii croaked, so half heartedly went down to unplug it thinking this certainly wouldnt work as we had already unplugged it, pushed every reset button on it and nothing happened - but low and behold I went down before dinner, unplugged everything as you suggested, ate and then went back down, plugged everything back on and the red ready light came on!! Thank you so much for your post - we had gotten several games for our kids for Christmas, so thankfully now, they will get to play them!! :o)

My daughter and I were getting ready to play a game together, and it wouldn't turn on .. I remembered the power had surged a couple days ago, and thought that even though the wii was plugged into a surge protecter, that the protecter had failed. I was so upset. Hi heidiisthebest, you need to unplug everything from your console, then leave it unplugged for 2 minutes. At that time, you can try plugging it back in, but use an outlet - not the power strip. Hope it helps!

Sam, unplug everything from your wii. This includes any cards, remotes, whatever ... unplug EVERYTHING. Take the wii and your power cord to another outlet. Don't use the power strip. Wait two FULL minutes, plug only the power cord into the wii and then plug it directly into the wall outlet to see if it works. If this doesn't work, chances are you have a different problem. Good Luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you :)
What is it i do take the wires out the back of the wii and from the mains leave it out for 2 miniutes then put it back in ? (sorry only 13)

Lu, for some reason the reset never did a thing for us. It was leaving it completely unplugged for three minutes that finally reset the ac adapter. I'm glad you've got your wii working again and thanks for stopping in!

Wow. I cannot thank you enough for your insight to this. We had a power outage today(thank you AT&T U-verse installers) and everything came back on BUT the Wii. My son freaked. He felt like he had caused it because he had left it on to go hop on the computer to look up Netflix movies he wanted to see. I even went so far as to double check my warranty from Gamestop, which went out of date two months ago, and contact a friend who had Wii; just to check out our power cord. But this... this worked. Everyone panicked that we'd need a new system, that all their saved game data was gone. We didn't realize how much the Wii was the center of our family fun until we couldn't use it.
So thanks again. The 2-minute trick worked like a charm and made me the epic Wii repairman of our house.

Thanks so much!!!! I was really pesimistic about whether this would work and prepared myself to throw my Wii away. Well less than 24 hours later, after reading your post and following the directions - my Wii is working like it should. I had to reactivate my internet connection but other than that, it's working like clock work. Instead of plugging it to my surge protector, I'll continue to plug it into the wall. Again, thanks. They should really include this as a troubleshooting tip in the manual.

I know others have said this, but thanks so much for taking the time to post this!! The Wii was a Christmas gift (2009) to our boys from their God-parents. We told them tonight that for some reason it had just stopped working and wouldn't turn on. They looked it up, found your fix, we tried it, and ta-da! Great news Timbo. We actually had ours plugged in to a surge protector and the wii still died on us. That's what I couldn't understand, apparently it wasn't enough to trip the surge protector, but it was enough to mess up the wii. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for the solution! My son plugged the wii into the outlet instead of the surge protector. Power went out and the wii didn't turn on for a few days. Tried your fix and it worked!!!!

How can I ever thank you?! I'm from the midwest and we constantly have power outages during the summer/fall due to weather. I did what you said, unplugged AC adapter for roughly 10 minutes and vola! I love my Wii not only for gaming, but I use it for Netflix as well. It would have sucked if I had to buy a new console. Thanks again, Lamme!

Oh my goodness!!! That is all I can say!! My Wii wouldn't power up after a Sergeant unplugged his phone from the jack and my Wii lost power. Whoo-hoo!!! 2 crying little girls and a sleeping little boy... They asked all morning if they could play "when brother takes a nap" because he jumps on the wii fit board. Yep--worked for us. I had tried unplugging in various sequences but not this. The kids were starting to get a panicked look and I could HEAR my bank account starting to hyperventilate. Fortunately, this worked and I just heard a chorus of cheers from both my children and my checkbook!

The exact scenario happened to us described above. The power went off for a moment where clocks had to be reset. Went to pay Wii later on & it wouldn't power up. The standby light wasn't even on. We Google searched & found this post. Did exactly what it said & VOILA it worked. Thank you!

Meg, I'm surprised that Nintendo hasn't done something to resolve this problem. It's obviously a common occurrence, yet nothing seems to be done about it. At the very least, more information should be made available ... everyone needs to know that this happens, it happens often, and that it can be fixed. It's sad to think of how many people have invariably thrown their wii in the trash thinking it was ruined. Take a look at the number of responses we've had on this article, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. We get many, many more people each day who read this, but don't comment. thanks, we have only had our wii for a short while and we were dissapointed it stopped working. Our light switch controls all the power to the outlets where are we was plugged in, and when we accidently flicked the switch on and off it knocked out all the power on that side of the wall which, threw out our wii. didn't figure that out until reading all the posts, this worked perfectly and we are back to playing ;) tks a million!! u saved us some $$!

funpages, I agree ... it's the ac adapter that needs to be reset, then most people seem to have their problem resolved.

Thank God this worked---we had the wii unplugged from the adaptor (hat was still plugged in the power strip) for 24 hours and hoped it would reboot---but no luck--this did the trick in 2 minutes---I was going to have to buy another one...thanks!
Great news AlmostDead and Jan!!! Yep, it's the simple step of unplugging everything and leaving it unplugged for two minutes. That's what it takes to reset the AC adapter. I'm so glad to hear that it worked.

IT WORKED! Oh my gosh. I didn't have high hopes for it to, but I didn't have anything to lose so I tried your idea. I left it unplugged for about almost 10 minutes just in case so then I plugged it in and the lights came back on and it's working again. You saved my wallet and my disk that was stuck in there. I found that the adapter had to be plugged directly into a socket with a reset button on it. Plug the adapter in hit reset plug it into the wii console and then it reset again.

Thank You!!! This suggestion was very helpful. I now have power to my Wii again. I'm glad I read this before I junked it and got a new one. We have had some recent Lightning storms. I could of swore the lightning had fried the Wii. But what I could'nt find out was why our Surge Protector box was fine and lighting up. The Wii was the only plugged in component that did'nt power on or light up. I too tried unplugging it just at the one end only. I never thought to unplug both ends and wait the 2 minutes and then plug the cord into a different wall outlet. Now it works fine in the Surge Protector box again. Thank You!!!!!

Everyone who owns a wii should know that any little power surge can render your wii unusable. The wii will not power on and many people assume it's a done deal and the wii console is fried and dead. Fortunately, a simple resetting of the ac adapter typically fixes the problem. The real key is to unplug everything and wait the full 2 minutes! Thanks for letting me know this solved your problem.

So many people have written to tell me that they've experienced the same problem. If you have an issue and your wii won't start, the simplest thing to try is to reset the power adapter. Thanks drbj, being without the wii would definitely be unpleasant. We don't have TV, so the wii is pretty much our entertainment. We actually use ours quite a bit ... I have 5 kids, so that kind of tells you it's a priority ;) I also like to use it. We do a lot of wii fit challenges and like the wii Active as well. If our wii stopped working, we'd definitely replace it as soon as we could.
